Week 14: Gray Bearded Men rolling – Mayors and Cheetahs going strong…

Cheetahs Outscore Dogs: The older the better. Is that really true? With fine wine, the answer is probably yes and other vintage items, products, and services. In the Big Daddy Football League (BDFL), two Gray Beards are leading the way, and they flat out just look better. Submitted for your approval: the Southside Cheetahs coached by the venerable Butch Neal. The Cheetahs are stronger than Wisconsin-aged cheese. In Week 14 in the BDFL, the Cheetahs ran roughshod over the Brookside Dogs. The Sin Wagon rolled to a 45-26 vict’ry. “Mark’s Mutts” had no answer for the Cheetahs as the cats beat up on the dogs in this match-up of upper echelon teams. The Cheetahs have served notice that they are definitely one of the teams to beat in the playoffs this season in the BDFL.
Mayors Ground Freebirds: The Magic City Mayors remain “on a roll” in 2022. The defending BDFL Champions have dominated thus far this season. In Week 14 of the current season, the Fultondale Freebirds were the latest victims for the Cronies to whip within an eyelash of an A.W. Mayor Arrington’s squad opened with an early lead over the F’birds and kept pouring in on through the long NFL week from Thursday Night into Sunday afternoon and continuing into Monday Night Football. The Mayors have established themselves as the Top Point team in the BDFL and (along with the Cheetahs) one of the clear favorites when the Big Daddy Championship Series (BDCS) begins in a couple of weeks. One of the big questions that remains on the brink of the start of post-season, is whom will be allowed to compete in the BDCS. All 16 BDFL teams have to be involved in games for the overall fairness of the proverbial system, and with only three weeks available in the NFL’s regular season, only a pair of 8-team brackets is the clear answer for the BDFL hierarchy to take and run with in a season that has just been a little different. After 14-weeks of the regular season, nine BDFL teams are already “out” of the “Old BDCS” under the 25-year-old “Bullet Rule.” It appears the immoveable object is going to come into direct contact with irresistible force.
Bullets Blow Out Bomb Squad: The force is the Benton Bullets. The original “Bullet Rule” was designed to slow the trajectory of the Bullets. “If it was anyone but Alabama,” said an ESPN insider, “they’d be in the College Football Playoff.” The same may be true in the BDFL. If it was anyone other than the Bullets, the next highest point teams would be placed into the Big Daddy Championship Series (BDCS) to complete the bracket. We’ll see what the white-collared, ivory-tower, BDFL leadership will do with the post-season – both the BDCS and the Big Mullet. In Week 14, the Bullets stated their case emphatically. The Bullets put an A.W. on the Mineral Springs Grenadiers, 32-9. This one was never close. Bullerino jumped out to an early 8-0 lead on Thursday Night, and never let their foot off the pedal. The Bullets have rolled to big vict’ries over the last few weeks, knocking off the potential top seeded Mayors and now the team formerly known as the Green Springs Hand Grenades. The Bullets will try to hold up their end in Week 15 – the last week of the regular season – and see if justice is served in a brave new world in the BDFL. Note: the Grenadiers did get a reward this past weekend… they captured the “Toilet Seat Team of the Weak,” with their paltry, single-digit performance.
Stating Their Case… DaBlitz Slams Sloths: DaBlitz concurs with letting teams with 7-8 records into the Big Dance. Jerry Fritz’s Gritz Blitz stated their case with an A.W. over the Sloth Monsters, 34-10. So, two of the teams on the “outside looking in,” came up with huge performances this past weekend. In Week 14, DaBlitz hammered the Three Toed Tree Dwellers. The vict’ry for the Red Baron Bunch gets them to 6-8 on the season and they have signed the petition for the “General Amnesty of 2022.” In fact, the Gritz Blitz has tied one of those big banners to the back of their vintage Messersmith aircraft, the old biplane look, to publicize the “8-teams-in” message that many believe will save the credibility of the BDFL as the post-season looms on the horizon.
Wildcats Win, Wildcats Win by Embarrassing Armadillos: The Duncanville Armadillos appear to be a virtual lock for the BDCS. The “Little Ol’ Team from Texas,” however was utterly embarrassed in Week 14. K.P. & Company got run off the field by the Western Hills Wildcats, 37-19, in a game that was just a tiny bit short (no offense to either team) of an A.W. “Cudos to the Wildcats,” said a fantasy football talking head, “for battling, and playing out the string to preserve the integrity of the points-only league in which they participate.” The inside scoop is that the ‘Dillos took the defeat relatively hard. They are reportedly planning a long trip to New Orleans over the holidays to regroup and to re-set, and to get ready for where ever they may land in the ever-changing landscape of the BDFL post-season.
‘Nauts Batter the Bandits: The ‘Nauts could care less about what teams are allowed to participate in the BDCS. Allyson’s Jugtown Juggernauts surged to an 8-6 record in Week 14. They did it with a gutty, one-touchdown win against another member of the GHS Class of ’82, Barry K. Stephenson. The final score was 26-19. The ‘Nauts were able to control the tempo against Old Barry’s Altadena Bandits, who seemed to be “out of sync,” and lacking consistency in performance down the stretch. The Bandits could be one of the “key” teams going into the last weekend of the regular season in the BDFL. Barry’s Boys are 7-7 on the season and a win in Week 15 would practically ensure that the Bandits get into the Big Dance, but a loss in the “pucker factor” finale would drop this team into the limbo that has been allowed to fester and create unprecedented debate along the rank and file of the league and light up the message boards all across cyberspace.
PowerSleds Edge Gamblers: Mad Jack Barnes turned 60 without a lot of the fanfare of some of the other members of the BDFL. And, over the course of the next year-and-a-half, at least five other BDFLers will hit the “six decade” mark. It’s the mark of a league that has been around since before the Internet. With that aside, the proud PowerSleds made a stand on Sunday. The “Mean Machine” showed up and showed out. The Sleds shot down the Gulf Coast Gamblers, 21-13, in a game that was really close until the final minutes. The Gamblers took the loss hard and it has been a tough season for the Dixie Mafia, who don’t to seem to any path to the BDCS – no matter how it is configured – and the Sled Heads are in the same sinking boat.
Bellcows and Blue Deacons Fight to the Finish: Another two teams tragically trapped on the “outside looking in,” despite the format of the post-season are the Fieldstown Bellcows and the Mt. High Blue Deacons. The Bulletin can’t write much about this Week 14 game. It was that bad. But, the Bellcows celebrated turning 60 with a vict’ry over the Hayden District Bishop Squad (HDBS) by the final score of 34-26.
Week 14 in the JrBDFL – “It’s all about the kids.” The stretch run in the Junior League is getting very interesting. A jumble of teams were at 8-5 going into Week 14 in the JrBDFL. The teenage angst was palpable. All of the Hands of Benton won their games to ease the stress in Lowndes County. Meredith Hand beat Ben Hand in a crucial cousin match-up. Meredith is one of the “contenders” for the post-season in the JrBDFL, in her division along with Matthew, who stretched his impressive winning streak to 9-straight. And, Milton beat Wilks. Another one of the Top Dogs – Hayden Roberts – lost, creating a wild Week 15 to come in the Junior League.
