Armadillos
Enjoy Green Grass and High Tides in A.W. over Blitz:
Week Ten in the BDFL featured a pair of
single-digit teams, one overtime game, and just one A.W. The A.W.
happened down at Kentuck Park just off the banks of the Black Warrior
River in Northport/Tuscaloosa. The homestanding Druid City Blitz was
dominated by the visiting Duncanville Armadillos. The game was close at
the outset, but K.P. & Company got fired up in the second half and took
off and ran away with a big vict’ry. NOTE: “Green Grass and High Tides”
– The Outlaws (Top Ten in Southern Rock Classics) Bandits
Flirtin’ with Distaster – Score only 3 – Lose to Bellcows:
Actually, there were two A.W.’s in the Big
Daddy Football League in Week Ten of the 2022 season. This one was just
under the radar, because the Altadena Bandits played so bad. Barry
scored a week-low three-points and was steam rolled by the Fieldstown
Bellcows, 27-3, at Moncrief Park in North Gardendale. It was the first
win ever by a Fultondale team* at the park according to numerous sources
familiar with the hist’ry of Barry, Belrose, and Metro Football in
Jefferson County. The Bandits claimed the “Toilet Seat Team of the
Weak,” with their paltry effort and the Bellcows mooed their way, all
the way home. NOTE: Molly Hatchet’s “Flirtin’ With Disaster” is an all
time Top Ten Southern Rock classic. *Belrose toiled for years in
Fultondale – in the Metro Football League – with Hortons, Hursts,
Headleys and Hazelrigs. There’s
Too Many Places I Gotta See - Sings Freebirds in Big Win: The Black Creek Freebirds stormed out to a
huge lead after NFL’s Thursday Night Football. Hime Hand’s QB scored
enough before Sunday even rolled around to defeat all but four BDFL
teams in Week Ten. At one point the Benton Bullets (who are the whippin’
boys of the Dreaded Schedule Maker (DSM) this season), were behind by
more than 40-points. However, the Bentonites did not roll over and play
dead. The Bullets rallied and scored 29-points to at least avoid an A.W.
– by two points. NOTE: “Freebird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd is typically voted
1, 2, or 3 on the Greatest Southern Rock Songs of all time. The other
two in that trio are Skynyrd’s “Sweet Home Alabama,” and “Ramblin’ Man”
by the Allman Brothers. Can’t You
See Mayors Rallying Past Grenadiers: Marshall Tucker introduced a flute to Southern
Rock. That’s right – three-part lead guitars, classic chords, steel
guitars, and harmonicas were Southern Rock staples along with long
jam-sessions. Then Marshall Tucker sticks a flute in there and laments,
“Gonna take a freight train, down at the station, I don’t care where it
goes,” and we’re all in, we’re all sold, and it’s Southern Rock. Go
figure. It’s always a Top Ten voted song on the Southern Rock polls,
surveys, and rankings. You can’t make this stuff up, and you can’t put
this in a neatly labeled box. In the BDFL, you can’t pay attention to
trends and standings and past vict’ries and losses, it’s what happens
that weekend. This past weekend, the Magic City Mayors rallied to knock
off the Mineral Springs Grenadiers, 37-25. Iron could only think: “I’m
gonna find me a hole in the wall, I’m gonna crawl inside and die.” Dogs Ram
Jam to Win vs. Gamblers: The Brookside Dogs’ have a borderline favorite
borderline Southern Rock song. It’s “Black Betty” by Ram Jam. The
Bulletin staff just listened to it again. There’s no borderline to
it – it is a Southern Rock song, but probably outside the all-time Top
Ten. It doesn’t matter, especially when it’s your son’s walk-up song in
baseball (Samuel Burr). It even mentions Birmingham, and a child “gone
wild.” That’s probably what the Gulf Coast Gamblers thought after
“Mark’s Mutts” departed from the Redneck Riviera with a lopsided vict’ry
over the Dixie Mafia. The final score read Dogs 30 – Gamblers 12. “Bam
ba lam!” said Dog. Sloths
Tied to the Whippin’ Post – Results in Wildcats Win: The Bulletin executive staff didn’t
know until the other day that, “I ain’t wastin’ time no more,” was
written by Greg Allman after the loss of his brother Duane Allman. It
was based on dying young and obviously not wasting time, but the main
tune was taken from random jamming from Dickie Betts during the middle
of the classic Whippin’ Post in concert. So, you never know. In the BDFL
in Week Ten, you wouldn’t necessarily say that the Sloth Monsters had
one hand tied behind their back. You might not even say the Tree Toed
Tree Dwellers were tied to the Whippin’ Post. You could say that Mukes’
team just didn’t have enough fingers, and a good enough grip to hang
onto vict’ry, so the Sloths lost to the Western Hills Wildcats, 18-15,
in a close game. “We tied ‘em to the whippin’ post,” said the Jerry
James of the famed James Gang. “Good Lord, I feel like I’m dying,” said
Mukes. The Bulletin had it right to start with… Mukes was tied
to the whippin’ post in Week Ten. Blue
Deacons Hold on Loosely to Vict’ry over ‘Nauts: The Hayden District Bishop Squad (HDBS) only
scored 12-points in Week Ten in the BDFL, but they were able to “Hold on
Loosely” to a win over the Jugtown Juggernauts, who only scored nine
points in fantasy football. The Southern Rock Band - .38 Special – was a
little smoother than most and got put in more of a pop category than
most groups of their era. However, a number of their tunes have held up
over time, especially “Wild Eyed Southern Boys,” and “Rockin’ Into the
Night.” Meanwhile, the Bishops and ‘Nauts play a snoozer, but thanks to
Southern Rock, it get a little more pub than it deserves. Overtime –
Southern Rock Holds Up and in BDFL Cheetahs Top PowerSleds: In one overtime game in Week Ten, the Cheetahs got the win against the PowerSleds in a game than finished at 10-10. The Bulletin invites you to put together your Southern Rock Top Ten.

own terms.
