Freebirds Rally From the Brink – Upset Top Seeded Grenadiers: A dream season for the Mineral Springs Grenadiers turned into a nightmare on Monday Night. The Commissioner’s team ran roughshod over the entire Big Daddy Football League in the regular season. The Grenadiers “named and claimed” the Top Seed in the Big Daddy Championship Series (BDCS) the old-fashioned way – they earned it. But, a funny thing happened on the way to the coronation. The bottom seed in the Big Dance, the Fultondale Freebirds, never gave up and pulled out the upset in Overtime in Round One of the BDCS. “Bama beat aub in 4OT,” said Jaimie Hand, “I didn’t want to be that dramatic, and Bama upset Georgia in the SEC Championship Game. So, I studied those scenarios and decided to go for it.” Who would have thought, that a short TD flip from Tua to Waddle would be the wrecking ball for Old Iron Hand’s season. But, that TD pass in the Ceasar’s Palace Superdome doomed the Grenadiers. It gave the Freebirds QB 3-points, and Hime’s WR 3-points, and forced OT, where the F’birds were waiting with “small points” up-and-down their roster to pull out the come-from-behind upset. So, the Commish is devastated and the Freebirds are still flying.
Cheetahs Claw Wildcats in A.W. Upset: Another Upset – much like Bama’s upset slaughter of UGa – occurred in Round One of the BDCS, but this one was a little more predictable (no offense Jerry James). The Southside Cheetahs won games all year long. It was what Butch Neal’s team was really good at in 2021. They didn’t always score a ton of points this season (hence their #6 Seed), but they got the job done on most “any given Sunday.” The Western Hills Wildcats utilized a lot of “smoke and mirrors” to claim a lofty spot in the playoffs, but they were no match for the “rocking and rolling” Sin Wagon this past weekend. The Cheetahs clawed the Mildcats, and put an A.W. on the “James Gang” by the final score of 36-6. It was an epic beat down, and signals that everyone else in the Big Dance, better watch out for the Southside Cheetahs.
Blitz Blows it – Drops Upset Bid Against the Mayors: The Druid City Blitz was hoping to ride the “upset wave” in Round One. Jerry Fritz’s team was seasoned and experienced after rallying down to stretch to secure a spot in the BDCS. The Gritz Blitz got into the playoffs as the Number Seven seed, and went into round one with what they thought was a good chance to get the “upset train” rolling in the BDFL. The only problem was that the message never got translated or transmitted to the Second Seeded Magic City Mayors. The Cronies came out firing on all cylinders in Week 16 and dominated this match-up from start-to-finish. The final score looked relatively close at 33-17, but the Mayors were in charge the whole way, kind of like Mayor Arrington in the 1980s running a “closed door – no media” city council session (that would later fire up once TV reporter Lowrey Langford to run for the office, and keep the Birmingham Mayor’s Office in constant turmoil). The Mayors advance and DaBlitz meanders home to contemplate what could have been, and to return to the “drawing board,” to try and figure out how to escape from the noxious “Null Set Club.”
The PowerSleds Flex in Round One Win: In an almost similar score, the Fairfield PowerSleds defeated the Gulf Coast Gamblers, 30-17. “It was exactly the same,” said one bystander, “just different.” The 4th-seeded “Mean Machine” came to play in Round One, and that was bad news for the “Dixie Mafia.” Mad Jack’s purple-and-gold partisans played old school football. The Sleds exhibited foundational fundamentals. Jack could not have been prouder of his team with their blocking, tackling, and assignment football. It all added up to a vict’ry for the Sleds. For the Gamblers it was a bitter defeat for the Real Deal and his loyal supporters along the Gulf Coast.
No Upsets in the Mullet – Sloths Win Big O’er ‘Nauts: Speaking of the Gulf Coast, the Big Mullet Series (BMS) got underway in Week 16 of the NFL/BDFL season with almost as much fanfare as the BDCS. However, there were no upsets in Round One of the BMS, as all of the Top Seeds “held serve.” And, in the consolation bracket, there were no close games. So, read into that what you will, it’s kind of the nature of the loser’s bracket, especially when the winner of the loser’s bracket doesn’t get funneled back into the winner’s bracket. All the BMS Champion gets is a top Pony Pick, and that doesn’t come around until the spring, and there are no good skill players this year in Mel Kiper and Todd McShay’s proverbial “big boards.” Alas, in Round One of the BMS, the Sloths (#1 Seed) killed the Jugtown Juggernauts (#8 Seed) by the final score of 35-15. To add a little boredom, it was one-point short of an A.W.
Bishops Beat Bandits Bad: “A lot of alliteration by anxious anchors in powerful positions,” said a nerdy reporter in Broadcast News (the movie). But, Bishop’s Blue Deacons did beat Barry’s Bandits badly in a BDFL battle. That’s all you really need to know about this game in the Big Mullet Series (BMS). Oh, the Hayden District Bishop Squad (HDBS) entered as the #2 Seed in the BMS and the Bandits (#7 Seed) were next-to-last.
Brookside Dogs Defeat Bellcows: Continuing in the Big Mullet Series (BMS), the Brookside Dogs (#3 Seed) beat the Fieldstown Bellcows (#6 Seed) by just over two touchdowns, 29-14.
Bullets Aim and Fire at Armadillos: The Benton Bullets (#4 Seed) shot down the Duncanville Armadillos (#5 Seed) by eight, 24-16, in the closest game in Round One of the Big Mullet Series (BMS). Next, the winners will play the winners and the losers will face the losers in Round Two of the glorified consolation bracket in the BDFL.
Week 16 the Jr BDFL - “It’s all about the kids.” Meanwhile in the Junior League, after a two-week playoff in what is Round One of the JrBDFL, the IronLegs of Selma will face Hayden Robert’s team in the finals, which will stretch through Week 17 and Week 18 in the NFL. Both from the Morgan Academy Class of ’22, Hayden upset the Top Seeded Ethan Arrington squad, and Wade Mason (IronLegs) knocked off Matthew Hand.
