True Grit
John Wayne and Glen Campbell shown here in True Grit were both honored in Throwback Week 2018

Legends shine during Throwback Week 2018

AMARILLO, TX - "Grit" is defined as firmness of mind; invincible spirit; unyielding courage; fearlessness; fortitude. The same attributes that could be used to describe the former USC tackle, Marion Morrison, who would go on to be the legendary actor, John Wayne. "The Duke" and 15 other "legends" were recognized with honorary teams during Week 6 of the BDFL. True Grit was a 1969 classic Western film starring John Wayne as U.S. Marshall Rooster Cogburn. This film is arguably Wayne's best work since this was his only Academy Award performance. Historians agree that the Cogburn character was based on Deputy U.S. Marshal Heck Thomas who brought in some of the toughest outlaws of his day including the Wild Bunch and the Dalton Gang. The film also included Hollywood legends Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper along with another 2018 BDFL Throwback honorary member, Glen Campbell, who sung the title song to the movie that was nominated for an Oscar. Also when we were at Gardendale High School, we had a football player that I can't remember his real name, but he was nicknamed "True Grit", and he once got hit by a car while crossing the street going to Bartee's for the team's weekly steak dinner. Meanwhile back in the BDFL, this was Throwback Week 2018. John Wayne's Glendale Dukes showed some "true grit" in easily handling the original Iron Hand's Arkansea Ironmen, 43-26, while Glenjamin's Wichita Linemen got whipped by Ronnie Van Zant's Jacksonville Freebirds, 52-37. Kenny "Snake" Stabler and Paul W. "Bear" Bryant showed their "pluck and grit" in hard-fought wins while Hank Sr., Gregg Allman, Warren Zevon and Jack Daniel all notched vict'ries in Week 6 for their honorary BDFL clubs. True Grit (Someday, Little Girl) by Glen Campbell 1969

BDFL News

Throwback Week 2019 turns the clock back to the 1970s

TITLETOWN - Throwback Week 2019 is looking like nineteen seventy something with eight classic NFL vs. WFL match-ups to play the "what if" games we were all denied in our youth... Falcons vs. Americans, Lions vs. Wheels, Eagles vs. Bell, Bears vs. Fire, Dolphins vs. Grizzlies, etc. Plus, this gives us a chance to open the vault on classic WFL tales like Uncle Ronnie kicking against Csonka in 1975 at Legion Field and Elvis and Charlie Rich in the stands at the Liberty Bowl in 1974. It will be an exciting era to re-live for the BDFL.
