GARDENDALE -
Like the BDFL, the B-52's are an eclectic group
from the South than can trace their roots back to the 1970s. The BDFL
was officially established in 1995, but can trace their origins back to
the Metro Football League in Birmingham, AL from the early part of the decade, while
the American "new wave" band was formed in Athens, GA in 1976. The band
draws its idiomatic sound from retro 50s and 60s pop sources, trash culture
and rock 'n roll, whereas the BDFL leans more towards punk, country and
rock 'n roll. The band has had a long, steady string of pop cult hits
including Rock
Lobster (their first big hit in 1979),
Planet Claire,
Private Idaho,
Love Shack and
Roam.
Both the B-52's and the BDFL have
stood the test of time and both are considered national treasures today.
Speaking of roaming, the defending 2017 BDFL Champions
(Western Hills Wildcats) are on the move again. This time to
Newburyport, MA where
they were recently photographed by the paparazzi donning the BDFL's new
retro custom t-shirt on the picturesque New England port.
After the photo got favorable reviews in several national trade
publications (Ex: Rubber World reported "Looking
good...Deserving of the best lobster in New England"), the jealous
Jugtown Juggernauts (winners of the 2016 BDFL Championship) went
public over the photo saying, "Cute picture of the dog". The BDFL lesson here goes back
to the infinite wisdom of the late great Slim Dismukes...We tolerate
freedom of speech, but you will suffer the consequences.
