MAGIC CITY -
Midnight blue is a very dark shade of blue. Midnight blue is not
the same as navy blue. While both are dark shades of blue,
midnight blue is darker than navy blue and is generally
considered to be the deepest shade of blue, so dark that it is
often mistaken for black. The name “midnight blue” was first
used in 1915. The hue is named for its resemblance to the very
dark blue shade of the night sky around a full moon. While the
color name is relatively new, midnight blue skies can be seen in
Vincent Van Gogh's work from the 1800s. In the 1920s, England’s
Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII (1894–1972) popularized the color
with his suits and tuxedos. One of his midnight blue evening
suits is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Crayola named a crayon “midnight blue” in 1958, replacing the
shade that had previously been known as “Prussian blue”.
Midnight blue projects sophistication and elegance. Its link
with formal occasions and royalty means it conveys confidence,
power and authority, while its deep hue can also come across as
dark and mysterious. According to color psychology, blue is
associated with trustworthiness and reliability. Dark shades of
blue are also linked to authority and intelligence. Midnight
blue’s deep appearance makes this impression, but because it is
so close to black, it projects qualities associated with black
like power, strength and formality and conversely mourning and
fear. Midnight blue is a versatile, timeless color. Midnight
blue is sensible, yet sophisticated and goes well with a wide
range of other colors. The NFL's Chicago Bears and MLB's New
York Yankees are good examples of teams that use midnight blue
as a dominate team color. In the BDFL, the Western Hills
Wildcats' colors are midnight blue and orange patterned after
their time in Libertyville, Illinois and DaBears. In Week 15 of
the BDFL, the two-time consecutive BDFL champs (Mayors) used
some Monday Night Football (MNF) "midnight mojo" to tame the
Wildcats (37-36) in a game that could foreshadow the Mayors
resiliency to win three straight BDFL titles. "Midnight Blue" is
also a classic rock song by former Foreigner singer-songwriter
Lou Gramm that was released early in 1987 by Atlantic Records.
It was the lead-off single from Gramm's debut album, Ready
or Not, from February 1987. Despite its hit status, it's
still considered one of the decade's truly most underappreciated
singles and is considered the last great single of the
album-rock era. "Midnight Blue" has remained Gramm's
highest-charting solo hit to date. Also in Week 15 of the BDFL,
"Midnight Blues" can be appropriately used and be traced back to
Monday Night Football (MNF) and the last game of the 2023 BDFL
regular season when the Brookside Dogs and Jugtown Juggernauts
came up a tad short of making the BDFL's prestigious Big Daddy
Championship Series (BDCS) and a shot at the 2023 BDFL
Championship Title.
