BIRMINGHAM -
No trip to the Iron Bowl was ever complete without a stop at the Tide
& Tiger. Officially named the Tide & Tiger Lounge it
was the quintessential sports dive bar located at 409 Graymont
Avenue just across the street from the south end zone of venerable
Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The business was founded in the
late 1930s by A.D. Likis as a restaurant called Ramona's which
served barbecue and beer. In 1946 Alec Gulas bought the restaurant
and remodeled it with the classic football-shaped windows. It
re-opened on April 6 of 1946 as the Quarterback Drive-Inn Diner.
The name remained the same when Likis purchased the restaurant back
from Gulas in 1951. Dolly and E.W. Green operated the business for
Likis as the Stadium Drive-Inn until 1959 when they ran
into some trouble with the Birmingham City Commission. Lucian
Simonetti (from St. Augustine's in North Birmingham) and Fred Russo
purchased the business in 1959 and donned it the Tide & Tiger.
They continued to serve meals through the 1970s and 80s and later
added liquor to the sports bar's offerings. The hey-day of the
Tide & Tiger was undoubtedly before the 1990s when the Alabama
Crimson Tide and the Auburn Tigers still played some bigtime home
games at Legion Field including the annual Iron Bowl rivalry match.
Any tailgate in the world these days, falls short of tailgating at
the Tide & Tiger. You had to be a pretty big man, just to
get in the place and walk out with four beers. It's where Belrose
held the umbrella for the Hand Brothers before an Iron Bowl and it's
the home of other countless great football tailgate tales. There
were no extravagant tailgate plans back then, all you had to say
was, "We'll see you at the Tide & Tiger" and that was enough. If you
never got to tailgate at the iconic Tide & Tiger, I feel
sorry for you. Your life will never be complete. If you're lucky,
you may can still find it open for an occassional new USFL game, the
Birmingham Bowl, a Magic City Classic, or for a BDFL game held at
the stadium. In Week 12 of the 2023 BDFL season, the Magic City
Mayors delivered a jagged dagger through the heart of the Altadena
Bandits with a roaring (56-10) win. Afterwards, the two-time
straight defending BDFL Champions celebrated their sixth vict'ry of
the season at the Tide & Tiger.
