LEXINGTON,
KY - In the world of thoroughbred racing, the term "dark horse"
originated from gamblers betting jargon to describe a new, yet
unproven, promising race horse. Over the years, the term "dark
horse" has been used to describe a previously lesser-known
person, team, or thing, that emerges to prominence in a
situation, especially in a competitive enviroment involving
multiple rivals, that in theory is unlikely to succeed, but has
a fighting chance. A dark horse is unlike an "underdog" who is
usually expected to lose. The term has found its usage today
mostly in sports, politics, experimental technology and with new
business start-ups. The term began as a horse racing parlance
for a race horse that is relatively unknown to gamblers and
bookmakers, thus difficult to establish a betting line for, or
against. The first known mention of the concept of a dark horse
came in Benjamin Disraeli's novel The Young Duke (1831).
Disraeli's protagonist, the Duke of St. James, attends a horse
race which ends with a surprise finish: "A dark horse which had
never been thought of, and which the careless St. James had
never even observed in the list, rushed past the grandstand in
sweeping triumph". Donald Trump was a dark horse in the 2016
U.S. Presidential election who went on to be elected President
over a slew of candidates. The Texas Rangers were a dark horse
in the 2023 Major League Baseball (MLB) playoffs who went on to
win three playoff serieses including a World Series vict'ry over
the Arizona Diamondbacks. This season in college football, the
Alabama Crimson Tide is considered a dark horse to even make the
College Football Playoff (CFP) much less to win it all. Through
Week 10 of the BDFL, a couple of dark horses have emerged in the
league who could rise up and win their first BDFL championship
title. Not to jinx them, but the dark horses of the 2023 BDFL
season are the Duncanville Armadillos (6-4) and the Druid City
Blitz (9-1). Are they contenders, or pretenders? We'll have to
wait and see, if these dark horses can finish the race in front
of them now.

TITLETOWN
- The league's crystal ball hasn't been the same since The
Wizard left us several years ago, but we still have one stored
in an old bowling bag in the attic and we usually get it out
this time of year to help us try and predict which teams will
make the BDFL's elite playoff bracket commonly known as the Big
Daddy Championship Series (BDCS). The crystal ball is dusty on
the outside and cloudy on the inside, meaning there is still a
lot of football to be played this season, but when pressed for
an answer the crystal ball came up with these eight teams it
predicts to make the 2023 BDCS. Current records and current
point totals shown below. These totals are not necessarily
indicative of who would make the BDCS, if the season ended
today, but rather who the crystal ball is predicting to make the
BDCS after the 2023 BDFL regular season ends after Week 15.
