BIRMINGHAM,
AL - "Shock Me" is a song by the American heavy metal band Kiss,
which first appeared on their 1977 LP album Love Gun.
The song was written by lead guitarist Ace Frehley and it was
his lead vocal debut with the band. The song was inspired by an
event that took place during Kiss' Rock and Roll Over tour,
when Frehley was nearly electrocuted by his own electric guitar.
Frehley's classic guitar solo during the song ranked #50 in Guitar
World's "100 Greatest Guitar Solos Ever". As the legend
goes, on December 12, 1976 during the opening song of a concert
at the Lakeland Civic Center in Lakeland, Florida, Frehley
touched a metal staircase railing, which was ungrounded. He was
shocked, knocked out and fell to the ground, while the concert
was delayed for 30 minutes. The show was eventually completed,
and Frehley claimed to have lost the feeling in his hand for the
remainder of the concert. Weeks later, Frehley presented the
song "Shock Me" to Kiss in its completed form. According to Gene
Simmons, the rest of the band was not involved in the song's
arrangement whatsoever. Although Frehley had written a number of
Kiss songs previously, this was his first time he performed the
lead vocals. The song became his "theme song" with the band.
Frehley, who was very insecure about his singing ability,
recorded the vocals while lying on the floor. "Shock Me" was
added to Kiss' setlist starting with the Love Gun Tour.
Frehley's guitar solo, previously performed during "She" and
then "Cold Gin" was added to the song. The song was dropped from
the setlist after the 1977–78 Alive II tour. Kiss did
not perform the song again until Frehley returned to the group
for their 1996–97 Alive/Worldwide tour. "Shock Me" is
still widely considered one of Kiss' best songs. In Week 6 of
the BDFL, the Fairfield PowerSleds headed east on 3rd Avenue,
then over to Graymont Avenue to face the two-time (2021 and
2022) consecutive league champions (Magic City Mayors) at
venerable Legion Field. The Sleds shocked the world and rolled
on to vict'ry as they upset the Cronies 36-22 at the Ol' Gray
Lady. It was also Throwback Week 2023 as the BDFL celebrated the
1969 season, the last season before the 1970 NFL/AFL merger
ushered in the monopolized, modern era of professional football.
In these honorary BDFL Throwback Week match-ups, the Centurions
speared the Beavers in overtime, the Cougars shocked the Stars,
the Senators skinned the Cool Cats, the High Tops stomped the
Mustangs, the Killers trumped the Blackjacks, the Dodgers
squashed the Red Roaches, the Mad Bombers sank the Sharks, and
the Greasers high-jacked the Hackers. More on the 1969 season

TITLETOWN -
The 1969 NFL season was the 50th regular season of the National
Football League (NFL), and its last before the AFL–NFL merger.
The season ended when the Minnesota Vikings defeated
the Cleveland Browns in the NFL Championship Game, earning the
right to face the American Football League (AFL) champion Kansas
City Chiefs in Super Bowl IV at Tulane Stadium in New Orleans.
This was the last awarding of the Ed Thorp Memorial Trophy to
the NFL champion. The 1969 American Football League (AFL)
season was the tenth and final regular season of the AFL. The
Chiefs defeated the Oakland Raiders in the final AFL
Championship Game, then soundly defeated the National Football
League's Minnesota Vikings in Super Bowl IV. The AFL and the NFL
completed their merger the following season (1970) and realigned
into two 13-team conferences (AFC, NFC) in one league (NFL),
with the conference champions meeting in the Super Bowl. For the
BDFL's 2023 Throwback Week in Week 6, we are recognizing 16
gunslinging quarterbacks from the "1969 era" with honorary teams
and BDFL match-ups to help recapture the memories of this
historic and unprecedented time in America and professional
football.
