The BDFL News

What defines a breakout player in the BDFL?

FOXBORO - When does a creek become a river? When does a pond become a lake? In the BDFL, when does an average player become a great player? A difference maker. A pick that can make the difference between a BDFL title, or a third place finish in your own division. That player who's never done it before, but rises to the occassion to deliver unexpected numbers for his team. This is what we refer to as a breakout player. The right breakout player selected in the 2006 Miller Genuine Draft could be the ticket to Titletown. A busted breakout pick is a bus ride back to mediocrity. It may be easier to give a couple of good examples from this past year to show what a true breakout player is all about in the BDFL. Let's look at Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith as our first breakout player example...

WR-Steve Smith/CAR

year rec yds td
2003 88 1110 7
2004 6 60 0
2005 103 1563 13

That is what you call a breakout year. For another good example from the 2005 season lets look at Larry Johnson...

RB-Larry Johnson/KC

year att yds td
2003 20 85 1
2004 120 581 11
2005 336 1750 21

I hope you get the picture. A breakout player is all about their future performance exploding, instead of repeating the past. This page is devoted to those who the BDFL's media experts peg as this year's best shots at breaking out.
