Dogs use trench warfare to nail Nauts

BROOKSIDE - World War I, also known as the First World War, the Great War, the Seminal Catastrophe, and initially as the European War in North America, lasted from July 1914 to November 1918. Contemporaneously described as "the war to end all wars", it led to the mobilization of more than 70 million military troops making it one of the largest wars of all-time. It is also one of the deadliest conflicts in history with an estimated nine million combatants and seven million civilian deaths as a direct result of the war, while resulting genocides and the 1918 influenza pandemic caused another 50-100 million deaths worldwide. Much of the combat during WWI on the Western Front (Luxembourg, Belgium and France) was fought using “trench warfare”. Trench warfare consisted of fighting lines defined by military trenches in which troops were well-protected from the enemy's small arms fire and sheltered from artillery. On the Western Front both sides constructed elaborate trenches opposing each other and the trenches were protected from assault by barbed wire. The area between opposing trench lines was known as "No Man's Land" since it was fully exposed to artillery fire from both sides. The Battle of Somme was a five-month long trench battle fought by Allied forces against the Germans in 1916 along the River Somme in France. The battle was intended to hasten a victory for the Allies, but it became the largest battle on the Western Front. More than three million men fought in the battle and one million men were wounded, or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history. One famous trench during the Battle of Somme was named “Goose Alley” most likely for its unique shape. Historians from northwestern Jefferson County in Alabama have concluded that early European settlers to Brookside, Alabama were survivors of the Battle of Somme and named their street north of the Russian Orthodox Church (founded in 1894) after the famous WWI trench which helped to save their lives during the war. In Week 12 of the BDFL, the home standing Brookside Dogs used some trench warfare of their own to upend the Jugtown Juggernauts (42-20) and move their season record to 11-1. The Dogs still remain the team to beat in the 2019 BDFL Battle for Supremacy.

The BDFL: 24 Teams in 24 Years

TITLETOWN - In 24 years things can change. From the BDFL's humble beginnings in 1995, seven of the eight original BDFL franchises still play in the league. Two have changed nicknames (Grenadiers and Freebirds) while others have changed their location names, but the "Magnificent Seven" still survive. Missing from the "Original Eight", the Hueytown Hummers were the first team to bow out for personal reasons, but left the BDFL at the highest standing. The next few to go for lack of participation included the expansion Pelham Blades and the Bristol Bootleggers. More recent teams to tap out included the Oak Mountain Fightin' Slovaks, the Pasco County Wizards and the Smoke Rise Woosiers. The last two mentioned were heavy contributors to the BDFL for many years who also left the league at the highest standing with an open invitation to re-join the league at any time. A couple of other obscure teams to fill-in when needed for scheduling conflicts over the years have included the Fieldstown Phantoms and the Homewood Highlanders. All totaled, the BDFL has consisted of 24 teams in 24 years and the league now stands at 16 teams in four divisions.
