Armos wax the Dogs in South Dallas
WAXAHACHIE,
TX - Some say the town's name is Native American for "cow" while others
say "buffalo". However, most agree the name's origin is from the Alabama
language, originally spoken in the region around the Waxahatchee Creek
by the Alabama-Coushatta tribe, who migrated to Eastern Texas in the
1850s. In the native tongue, "waakasi hachi" means "calf's tail", so the
town could have been called Calfstail, Texas. With the Waxahatchee Creek
bordering between Shelby and Chilton counties, Waxahachie, Texas shares
the same etymology as the Alabama creek. Many places in Texas and
Oklahoma have their origins in the Southeastern United States, due
largely to the forced removal of various tribes during this time. The
central area of Alabama that includes the Waxahatchee Creek was the home
of the Upper Creek moiety of the Muscogee Creek Nation for hundreds of
years. This also suggests the Muscogee Creek language origin of
Waxahachie. Tender Mercies is a 1983 film about a
down-on-his-luck country music singer named Mac Sledge that was filmed
in Waxahachie, but the exact town was never mentioned in the movie. The
original Tender Mercies starred Robert Duvall and he won the
1983 Academy Award for Best Actor for the lead role. The 2019 remake of
this classic was also filmed in Waxahachie, but it fell short of the
original. This time Keanu Reeves plays Mac Sledge who doubles as country
singer on Saturday nights and quarterbacks the South Dallas Armadillos
on Sunday afternoons. In the re-make, Mac wakes up in the wee hours on
Sunday morning in a strip joint called "Big Daddy's" after almost being
beat to death in a barroom brawl on Saturday night. He's taken in by the
club's dancing girls and nursed back to health with a lot of tender
mercy and then leads the team to vict'ry on Sunday afternoon. I don't
think there will be an Oscar this time around for Reeves, but the
Armadillos did defeat the previously undefeated Birmingham Bulldogs
37-13 in one of the movie's better scenes.
You Are What Love Means to Me by Craig Bickhardt from the
"Tender Mercies" soundtrack (1983)

The 2019 BDFL El Dorado Explorers
EL
DORADO
- When I'm taking to somebody who truly
understands fantasy football and I tell them that I'm in a 16-team
league, their eyes get real big. They understand that we play in the
major leagues of fantasy football. When you have 48 roster spots for
quarterbacks and only 32 can start in the NFL each week, then you know there
is some serious depth in the BDFL. Is there enough skill talent in the
NFL to support a 16-team fantasy league? This is usually a topic for discussion
with the doubters and I always air on the "yes" side since we have fielded 16
teams in the BDFL now for 15 years running. I've never seen an 18-team
league and I don't think I want to, but 8-10 team leagues are a joke. To
prove my point, like I do almost every season, below is what a 17th BDFL
team's roster could possibly look like this season in the BDFL through
Week 4...

NOTE: El Dorado is west of Fieldstown just before
you get to Lassiter Mountain. Known as a good place to drag race back in
the 1950s. It translates to "The Gold One", the name used by Spanish
Conquistadors back in the 1550s for the mythical golden empire in the
New World.
