WEEK 7
Under Dogs
Once an underdog to kick in Dallas, Brett Maher kicked a 63-yard field goal in Week 7

Brookside is priming the ol' vict'ry bell

BENTON, AL - Mr. Webster defines the word “underdog” as (1) a loser, or predicted loser in a struggle, or contest and (2) a victim of injustice, or persecution. Neither definition is very flattering, but in the sports world and in the BDFL, there can come great pride from being the underdog. Underdog was an animated television series from 1964 to 1973 about an anthropomorphic dog superhero. The cartoon series consisted of 124 episodes which aired mostly on NBC. The main character was the humble, lovable Shoeshine Boy who would transform into his alter ego “Underdog” whenever the lovely TV reporter Sweet Polly Purebred was being victimized by any number of regular villains each week such as Simon Bar Sinister, Riff Raff (who’s right-hand man was Mooch), The Electric Eel, Tap Tap the Chisler, Battyman and Overcat. Underdog also regularly faced enemies from alien worlds such as the Marbleheads from the planet Granite, the Magnet Men of the Magnet Planet, the Aliens from the planet Zot and the Flying Sorcerers of the Saucer Planet. When villains threatened, Shoeshine Boy would duck into a nearby telephone booth, where he was transformed into the costume-caped superhero to defend the world, defeat the evil villains and save Sweet Polly Purebread from danger. To keep the show witty, Underdog always spoke in rhyming couplets, such as "There's no need to fear, Underdog is here!" It is one of my all-time favorites from the delightful Saturday morning cartoon days of the late 60s and early 70s. Under the radar like an undercover cop in Cardiff, the Brookside Dogs now sport the best numbers (6-1 record 237 total points) in the BDFL. In what had the makings of an epic battle of the league's top two teams in Week 7, the Road Dogs easily defeated the home standing Bullets 39-14 down in the Black Belt. A long-time member of the BDFL's "Null Set Club" since 1995, this could be the year the perpetual Under Dogs bring the first BDFL title to Brookside and then they can ring the ol' vict'ry bell...Like they have always wanted to. The Supplemental Draft is underway

TITLETOWN - The BDFL's annual Supplemental Draft has begun. It is a simple process. Drop one roster player and add another non-roster player in an orderly fashion following Week 7 action. Strategically placed at the halfway point of the BDFL's regular season, the Supp Draft is designed to fill in roster holes and provide team depth for the remainder of the season. There is always plenty of untapped talent available at the mid-point of the season that was either overlooked in other BDFL drafts, or new players who have suddenly burst upon the scene. The Supp Draft is a one-round email draft in the reverse order of the overall points standings after Week 7. The draft order is intended to help those in need the most and to give the lowly a "punchers chance" to finish the season with some dignity, plus make the league as competitive as possible for the next 10 weeks. Here is the 2019 BDFL Supplemental Draft order and results to date...
