JOE
POOL LAKE, TX - "Playing dead", or
thanatosis, as it is known in the scientific world, is a survival tactic
where animals pretend to be dead to deter predators from devouring with
them. It can involve extreme stillness, sometimes foul smells, or even
mimicking a dead corpse-like appearance. In the natural world,
thanatosis is an instinctive, last-resort, anti-predator behavior where
an animal becomes completely still, appearing dead to a predator. It
often involves "tonic immobility," a state of paralysis, sometimes
accompanied by baring teeth, foaming at the mouth, or releasing foul
odors like opossums and armadillos do to make them seem inedible, or
already dead. Also known as "playing oppossum", it is a natural defense
mechanism used mostly by opossums, armadillos, hognose snakes, insects,
fish and even some mammals have been known to use this strategy for
survival. In the human world, "playing dead" is more commonly used as a
term for faking one's death as a dramatic trope in books, movies, soap
opras and streaming videos about deception, grief and pain. It is also a
concept that is sometimes explored in crime fiction, pop culture and
academic study. In the BDFL world, "playing dead", or "the walking
dead", refers to a team that has enough total points (429) to win their
division and to qualify for the Big Daddy Championship Series (BDCS),
but not enough regular season wins (need seven) to qualify the BDFL's
elite eight-team post-season championship series due to the league's
notorius Bullet Rule. In Week 15 of the BDFL's 31st season, the Texas
Armada sank the Altadena Bandits in the proverbial "Battle of Joe's Pool
Hall" in Duncanville, Texas by the score of 47-10 to finish the regular
season with a 6-9 record and just barely missing out on the 2025 BDCS
field.

TITLETOWN
- First off the BDFL is not a bracketed field, per say. All Big
Daddy Championship Series (BDCS) teams are seeded 1-8 for the
entire series with #1 being the highest seed based on their
point total during the regular season. For the Week 16 match-ups
in the first round quarter-finals of the BDCS it will be #8
vs.#1, #7 vs.#2, #6 vs.#3 and #5 vs.#4. These are all home games
for the higher seeds. The winning teams advance to the
semi-finals of the BDCS in Week 17 and the seeding match-ups
continue for the semi-final round with the home team hosting
once again. The finals of the BDCS in Week 18 are the last two
teams standing and this championship game is known as "The Big
Daddy Bowl". This year's Big Daddy Bowl XXIV (24th all-time)
will be held at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin (Titletown
2.0) in honor the the BDCS's icon and Crimson Tide and Packers
legend - Don Hutson. The four automatic bids of the 2025 BDCS
went to the BDFL's four divisional winners: Gray Beard -
Cheetahs (491), Green Horn - Freebirds (478), Yellow Hammer -
Wildcats (447) and Red Neck - Bellcows (392). The next four to
qualify for the eight-team 2025 BDCS were the wildcard teams
that made the league's elite post-season playoff field based on
having at least seven wins through Week 15 (the end of the
BDFL's regular season) and the most total points from the rest
of the field. The 2025 BDCS wildcard teams include the Sloth
Monsters (440), Dogs (437), Grenadiers (407) and Juggernauts
(395). The BDCS will begin in Week 16 and run until Week 18 and
may the best team win the 2025 BDFL Championship Title and take
home the coveted Grand Daddy Trophy for a year.
