WATSON,
AL - Roughly fifty years ago, on
Saturday, October 2, 1976, the #6 ranked Georgia Bulldogs coached by
Vince Dooley manhandled the #10 ranked Alabama Crimson Tide coached by
Paul "Bear" Bryant 21-0 in Athens, Georgia. The game was regionally
televised by ABC and the loss prevented the Tide
from capturing a
sixth consecutive Southeastern Conference (SEC) title. The humiliating
shutout loss was the first shutout suffered by the Crimson Tide since a
24–0 loss against Tennessee in 1970, and it was also the first time the
Tide had been blanked since the installation of the wishbone offense in
1971. This lopsided loss, along with the embarasssing season-opening
home loss to Missouri (20-7) at Legion Field the year before, forced
Bryant and offensive coordinator, Mal Moore, to re-examine Bama's
wishbone attack and how they would run the offense moving forward. The
Tide would eventually "break the bone" to run their own more wide open
and explosive hybrid version of the wishbone that led to one of the best
runs in Bryant's 38-year head coaching career and one of the best runs in college football
history. After the Georgia debacle, the Tide rattled off a 7-1 run
culminating with an impressive 36-6 vict'ry over Terry Donahue's UCLA
Bruins in the Liberty Bowl to finish 9-3 and ranked #11 in the final
1976 Associated Press (AP) poll. After the "woodshed moment" in Athens,
Bryant went on to finish his career from that point with a 68-11-1
record (.856 winning percentage) and two undisputed AP poll national
championships in 1978 and 1979. In Week 14 of the BDFL's 31st season,
the Western Hills Wildcats came to the proverbial "Blacktop" at Mineral
Springs and throttled the Grenadiers 50-26. The Wildcats were able to
run the ball and throw it while the G-Men had no answers on either side
of the ball. The BioCats are priming for the upcoming 2025 Big Daddy
Championship Series (BDCS) to begin in Week 16, while the Grunts are now
re-examining everything including how they would like to finish out the
2025 BDFL season.

AUDUBON PLACE - This time of year when not observing wildlife,
the BDFL is getting ready for the post-season to determine
another title champion. What it takes to get there and it isn't
easy. As you know, the BDFL is more akin to a marathon than a sprint. First
you must qualify for the league's elite post-season series known
as the Big Daddy Championship Series (BDCS), to have a shot at
the title. The BDCS is
composed of the BDFL's four divisional winners (Green Horn, Gray
Beard, Yellow Hammer and Red Neck divisions) and then the next
best four wildcard teams. All BDCS qualifiers must have at least seven wins
through the 15-game BDFL regular season to assure the title
champions will have a winning record at the end of the
post-season. All BDCS teams are then seeded
1-8 in the first round quarter-finals (with #1 being the highest
seed) by their point total during the regular season. The winning
teams advance to the semi-finals of the BDCS and the match-ups
continue the seedings for the semi-final round. The highest seed is the
home team in both the quarter-finals and semi-finals. The losers
fall into a BDCS "losers" bracket to battle it out for the
season-ending slots of third through eighth place for the year.
The finals of the BDCS is called "The Big Daddy Bowl" and it is
played at a neutral site (to be determined) along with seven
other traditional BDFL bowl games with three more in the BDCS and
four more bowl games from the conclusion of the consolation Big Mullet Series
(BMS) for season-ending slots of 9-16 place. The BDCS and the
BMS start in Week 16 of the BDFL season and culminate in Week 18
with the end of the NFL's regular season. Here's a look at the
BDFL's 2025 bowl games and locations that will end the 2025 BDFL
season and crown a new BDFL champion.
