GLEN
OAKS - "Wild Thing" is the signature song of the English rock band The
Troggs, released in 1966. It is a garage rock classic known for its raw
sound, simple yet catchy three-chord guitar riff, and flirtatious
lyrics. It was a staple on the jukebox at the Upside Down Plaza, the
after hours nightclub on Birmingham's Southside, during the 1980s. The
song was written by American songwriter Chip Taylor (real name James
Voight, brother of actor Jon Voight, no BS) in 1965. It was first
recorded by the American band The Wild Ones in 1965, but their version
was not a hit. The Troggs recorded their version in London in a single
take (take two) on April 1, 1966. Their single reached #1 on the
U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and #2 on the U.K. Singles Chart in 1966.
Due to a distribution dispute, the single was simultaneously available
on two different labels (Atco and Fontana) in the U.S., making it the
only single to reach #1 on the charts for two different companies at the
same time. The distinctive "whistling" solo in the middle of the song
was performed on an ocarina by the band's musical director, Colin
Frechter, to imitate the sound on the original demo. The song has been
covered by many artists, most notably by Jimi Hendrix at the 1967
Monterey Pop Festival, where he famously set his guitar on fire at the
song's conclusion. It has also been featured prominently in movies, such
as the 1989 film classic Major League when the Cleveland
Indians Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn (played by actor Charlie Sheen) was
called from the bullpen to pitch. The Troggs' version was inducted into
the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2019. In Week 9 of the BDFL's 31st season,
the Western Hills Wildcats called on their Chicago connections to help
ransack the maimed Altadena Bandits (41-19) at Glen Oaks Park on a sunny
Sunday afternoon.

The weekly routine ritual of the BDFL
|
|
TITLETOWN
- The BDFL season consists of 18 weeks of games, but there is
somewhat of a daily cadence to the league. For instance, the
weekly starting line-ups are due on Thursday prior to the NFL's
first game of the week with Thursday Night Football (TNF). The
BDFL's games aren't really finished until late Monday when the
Monday Night Football (MNF) game(s) has been completed. In
between these days, the BDFL has built a weekly routine that
keeps the league moving on to the next set of games and at the
same time keeps the league's members and fans informed along the
way. Most game weeks in the BDFL start on Wednesday once the
previous week's final scores are deemed official by the league
at the close of business (COB) on Tuesday. Wednesday is usually
when the league's "early birds" start sending in their starting
line-ups for the week's upcoming games. The league tries to send
out the "BDFL: Week X Starters, so far..." email on Wednesday
evening as a confirmation to those who have already sent their
starters in and as a reminder to those who have not, to do so. Once
all the league's starting line-ups have been submitted via the
league's starters form at
thebdfl.com/25Starters.htm, then the league sends out
another email with the subject line of "BDFL: Week X Starters"
on Thursday, or Friday, and sometimes this email will contain
the points put up on TNF from the Aladdin Scoring System (@$$).
Not much happens on Friday and Saturday in the BDFL until about
Week 16 when the NFL starts playing some games on Saturday. The
holiday weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas create some mild
disruptions in the league's weekly routine, but for the most
part the BDFL sticks to the schedule and plows right through.
Once all the NFL Sunday games are completed, the league sends
out a "Prelims" email on Monday showing where we are with the
points and scores for the week so far, knowing that the MNF
game(s) will be added to the totals once completed. Once the MNF
game(s) is completed, the BDFL send out the "Finals" email
informing the league to check your team's total points for the
week and to report any scoring discrepancies. Once all the
scoring feedback is received, then the weekly scores are
declared official and the week's "Recap" email is send out
ususally on Tuesday evening to put a bow on the week and it all
starts over again on Wednesday for the next week's games. Like
everthing else in this world, it's not at perfect system, but it
does keep the BDFL moving in the right direction each week.
