Dixie Mafia makes a statement in Week 1
|

MAGIC CITY - In John Grisham's 2022 book published by Doubleday out of
New York entitled The Boys From Biloxi, it clearly states in
the preface, "This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and
incidents either are the product of the author's imagination, or are
used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual persons, living, or dead,
or locals is entirely coincidental." This is where the fiction ends.
Most everybody knows Grisham gets these stories from the Old South and
just changes the names to protect the innocent. In the The Boys From
Biloxi, the Mississippi native is quick to throw out Hank Williams
and Al Capone and their connections to the notorious Gulf Coast town.
However, he does fail to mention Elvis Presley who used to hide out in a
bungalow with June Juanico just off hole #16 at the Great Southern Golf
and Country Club overlooking the Mississippi Sound in nearby Gulfport.
The Dixie Mafia, the State Line Mob, Mary Mahoney's Old French House and
Point Cadet are all right on point. The BDFL isn't into book reviews,
but if we were, we'd give this one a five-star rating and recommend you
read it and see the movie when it comes out. It's worth noting that the
first immigrants to transform Point Cadet were the ethnic Slavs, who
built the Slavonian Lodge in late 1930s to look after their own. It's
also worth noting that the the first Catholic church in Biloxi, the
Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary, was constructed in 1843 way before the
hard-working, suppressed Slovaks arrived to the Mississippi Gulf Coast.
In Week 1 of the 2025 BDFL season, The Biloxi Boys did what the Dixie
Mafia does. They came to town, greased the palms of the local
politicians, knocked off a few troublemakers and took over the gambling
operations at the Birmingham Race Course (36-14) all in a day's work.

The BDFL kicks off
their 31st season
|
|
TITLETOWN
- The BDFL is older than my youngest child. Mary Margaret
Katherine Hand was born at Brookwood Hospital in late January of
the Olympic year of 1996, while the first season of the BDFL was
winding down. The first BDFL Genuine Draft was in late
August of 1995, just 10 short years after Miller's Genuine Draft
(MGD) debuted in 1985 as an unpasteurized, cold-filtered beer
designed to taste like draft beer in a bottle. In the ealry
years, the weekly game scores were ciphered from 5.5-point agate
type from the NFL box scores on page 2 of the Tuesday edition of
USA Today since Gannett didn't print a Monday newspaper
at that time. The weekly match-ups and game scores were then
arranged with a little commentary in a handwritten, one-sheet
newsletter and faxed to the eight member teams each week. The
BDFL was truly a bare bones operation. The Fairfield PowerSleds
won the BDFL Championship Title in the first season, the first
of their record five BDFL titles. The personal computer and the
worldwide web would soon become commonplace shortly after the
BDFL was born and
www.TheBDFL.com debuted in the early 2000s. Over the years,
the league has stayed true to its humble roots and has built a
tradition of excellence. We appreciate your contributions to
make the league one of a kind. Here's to the 2025 season, the
31st Year of the BDFL, we hope you enjoy another season!
