Chasing the runaway American dream

DOLOMITE - The Born to Run single put Bruce Springsteen on the map in late August of 1975 when it was released by Columbia Records. Before then, he and the E-Street Band were a regional act, popular mainly in Springsteen's native New Jersey and along the Atlantic Coast. It was his last-ditch effort to make it big, and boy was it big. The song received extensive airplay on progressive, album-oriented rock radio stations at the time and it eventually became a "Top 40" American hit, reaching #23 on Billboard magazine's "Hot 100". The song is ranked #21 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All-Time, and it is included in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. Springsteen said the title came to him while on the road in Tennessee in 1973. It took him a couple of years to perfect it, but he started playing it to close out shows in May of 1974. The song is written in the first person as the protagonist (most likely Springsteen himself) pleads to his girlfriend Wendy who he loves to leave Freehold, NJ with him "cause tramps like us, baby we were born to run". The song has a distinctive opening and is full of well thought out, descriptive lyrics. I don't think Springsteen ever wrote, sung, or produced anything better than Born to Run in his entire career. It is the Boss at his best. Springsteen was 26 years old in 1975. The song is considered one of the best rock anthems to individual freedom ever written and the album by the same name is considered by critics to be one of the greatest rock albums of all-time. Week 16 in the BDFL was the "last chance power drive" for four teams in the Big Daddy Championship Series (BDCS) to earn their way into Big Daddy Bowl XIX in Week 17 and a shot at the 2020 BDFL Championship Title. The Fairfield PowerSleds held off the resurgent Druid City Blitz (40-28) and the Fieldstown Bellcows trampled the Duncanville Armadillos (38-20) in the BDCS semi-finals to advance and they will tangle next week for all the marbles and the ol' proverbial "runaway American dream".
