Texas Armada ambushes Sitting Bull

BENTON, AL - Jerry Jeff Walker was born Ronald Clyde Crosby in Oneonta, NY on March 16, 1942. Walker was a country music singer/songwriter best known for writing the 1968 classic Mr. Bojangles. Walker was inspired by a chance encounter with a street performer while in a New Orleans jail for public intoxication in 1965. The man insisted on being called Mr. Bojangles to conceal his true identity since he had been arrested as part of a police sweep of homeless people following a high-profile murder. Bojangles is thought to have been a real folk character who entertained informally in the South and California with authentic reports of his existence from the 1920s until the mid-1960s. Walker spent his early folk music days in New York City's Greenwich Village in the 60s, but later moved to Austin, TX and became part of the legendary country music outlaws in Texas in the 1970s along with Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Guy Clark, Michael Martin Murphey, Ray Wylie Hubbard and Townes Van Zandt. Some have called Jerry Jeff Walker "The Jimmy Buffett of Texas". Ironically, they were close friends with Walker giving Buffet his first ride to Key West from Coconut Grove, FL in a Packard in 1971. The same year, Walker and Buffett co-wrote Railroad Lady while riding the last run of the Panama Limited from Chicago to New Orleans. Jerry Jeff Walker died of throat cancer on October 23, 2020 at the age of 78. In Week 7 of the BDFL, the Texas Armada crossed the Mississippi, traversed up the Big Black, down the Tombigbee and back up the Alabama where they ambushed Sitting Bull and all his little Bullerinos 39-33. Founded in 1977, Bojangles is the name of a fast-food restaurant chain headquartered in Charlotte, NC that specializes in Cajun-flavored fried chicken and buttermilk biscuits. Bojangles is also where the Armadillos celebrated this big vict'ry after making their midnight getaway back up the Tennessee through the Smokies on their way to the Carolinas. Mr. Bojangles by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (1971)

Plano Superman
New England Patriots: Rex Burkhead does team major favor
Before the NFL, Rex "Superman" Burkhead was a legend in Plano and Lincoln

2020 BDFL Supplemental Draft order

PLANO, TX - Before Rex Burkhead was a running back in the NFL, and before he was adored by the corn folks in Nebraska, he was a superstar in Plano, Texas. Actually, he was a star even before then. Back when Plano suffered its worst season ever - a winless fall in 2003 - some fans in maroon were already talking about Burkhead. He was only in seventh grade, but he was going to bring the Plano mystique back. It was in seventh grade that he threw a 50-yard touchdown pass. In the summer before his freshman year, and only 5'8" at the time, he dunked a basketball. Once Burkhead got to Plano, people started calling him "Superman." He was never very big, getting to about 5'11" and 190 lbs. as a senior, but he always had a huge impact on the game. That was certainly the case on December 8, 2007, when Plano took on a Skyline that hadn't allowed more than two touchdowns in a game all season. Plano ended up scoring five TDs on the Raiders in a 41-20 vict'ry in the Class 5A Division I Region II final. In the vict'ry, Burkhead rushed 24 times for 158 yards and a touchdown. Burkhead also threw a touchdown pass and scored on a 64-yard punt return. Plano advanced to the 5A Division I semifinals that season before losing in overtime to Euless Trinity, the eventual champion. After starring at Plano, Burkhead became a legend at Nebraska, partly for rushing for more than 3,000 yards for the Huskers but even more so for his off-the-field work. His friendship with a young boy battling brain cancer gained national headlines, especially when the boy, Jack Hoffman, was allowed to run for a touchdown in Nebraska's spring game while wearing Burkhead's jersey. A true Superman that is sure to be picked up in the BDFL's upcoming 2020 Supplemental Draft.
