DRUID CITY - Like the
Fighting Slovaks before them, the league's newest franchise has their
roots in Europa. From Germany by way of Pittsburgh then through
Tuscaloosa comes the BDFL’s 18th franchise, the Druid City Blitz.
Named partially after Owner and General Manager, Jerry Fritz, the
“Blitz” nickname has its roots in early German military history dating
back to the Teutonic Knights and early German military conquests and
wars. It also encompasses German legends such as King Frederick William
III of Prussia and the bloody Red Baron (Manfred von Richthofen). The
team’s logo is the Iron Cross which is synonymous with German military
aviation excellence. “Blitz” is short for “Blitzkrieg” which is the
patented German military war strategy. Combine this with the USFL having
an original franchise called the Chicago Blitz then in essence, you have
the perfect nickname for the BDFL’s newest team. Druid City was selected
for the time Fritz spent growing up in Tuscaloosa and attending
Tuscaloosa Academy and the University of Alabama plus Druids were a
pretty violent lot themselves, but that’s another story altogether.
The Blitz will play their homes games at the newly expanded and newly
renovated Bryant-Denny Stadium. The team colors will closely resemble
the colors of Germany’s flag which include red, black and gold. The team
web page will be The Krieg which translates to The War. The Druid City
Blitz will compete in the BDFL’s Yellow Hammer Division.
