Coming from the old country

The Hellion

Poor draft preparation has stifled the Slovaks

by Mel Kiper, Jr.

FOXBORO - Buying beer and drinking it during the BDFL's Genuine Draft hasn't been a very successful formula for the BDFL's only foreign franchise. Over the last two years, their first two in the league, the Slovaks have proven to be the BDFL's proverbial patsy. Fielding the worst team in the history of the league, last year, the Hellions must be better this season because they can't get much worse. The league has helped teams like the Slovaks with the Rolling Rock Pony Draft where Reggie Bush should be the logical choice with the #1 overall selection, but you never know with the illogical Slovaks. The Fighting Slovaks are in jeopardy of losing half their nickname with the league because they never bring the "fight" to the match. Every league needs a whipping boy and it looks like the permanent role for these old countrymen.

How the league came up with the Fighting Slovaks

by Iron Hand

FOXBORO - Originally the league targeted Livingston as the home of the league's 16th franchise, but settled on Helena after ownership fell through in East Alabama. The Fighting Slovaks are based out of Helena but  derived their name from Slovakia and Brookside, Alabama. The "fight" in the Slovaks comes from their thousands of years of struggle for independence in their native homeland and from their early struggles in America as they fought to work in the coal mines of North Central Alabama. Their team colors of red, white and blue and team logo comes from the Slovak Republic flag. The copper helmets are a tribute to their copper mining heritage from the old country. The Slovaks compete in the Green Horn Division where they are still the BDFL's greenest team.
