comes down to the Final Countdown
TITLETOWN -
The Final Countdown is a song by the Swedish rock band Europe
that was released in 1986. Written by Joey Tempest who is the band's
frontman and main songwriter, the song was inspired by David Bowie's
famous Space Oddity tune from 1969 with all the space jargon,
i.e., commencing countdown, blast-off, ground control to Major Tom,
sitting in a tin can, planet earth is blue, etc. Originally written to
be the band's dramatic concert
opener, it was the first single from their third studio album, also
entitled "The Final Countdown".
During its prime, the song reached
number one in 25 countries. The song has become a favorite
at live sporting events in America, and is often played to rally home crowds
as the game clock counts down to a vict'ry. VH1 ranked it at number 66
on their list of the best hard rock songs of all-time which is a reach,
but the song did gain a cult type status after the band appeared
in a 2015 television commercial for GEICO. The :30 spot featured the
band playing in a breakroom as the microwave's timer was counting down
towards zero. The commercial played on the band's intrinsic name and the
80's nostalgia for the song, ending with "If you're Europe, you love a Final Countdown. It's what you
do." Here is the video

Countdown by Europe
which has been viewed over 400 million times on YouTube alone. The
BDFL's Big Daddy Championship Series (BDCS) is
in its final countdown stages as well, going from eight teams a week ago
to only four now. The Freebirds, PowerSleds, Wildcats and Mayors all
won in the BDCS opening round in Week 15 and will advance to the semi-finals
in Week 16. It's
now time to...Take your protein pills and put your helmet on.
