beat the Armos in Texas Hold 'Em
NOWHERE
- The classic country song The
Gambler was written by Don Schlitz, the Country Music Hall of Fame
writer, in 1976 when he was just 23 years old. It was his first hit, but
it was not an instant success. Schlitz shopped the song in Nashville for
two years before Bobby Bare, Johnny Cash and others finally recorded it.
However, it was Kenny Rogers' 1978 version that made it famous. It was a
huge Country hit and made it to the Pop charts as a crossover. The song
tells the story of a late-night encounter on a train "bound for
nowhere" between a young man and an older man known as "The
Gambler". The Gambler tells the young man that he can see he's "out
of aces" by the look in his eyes and offers him some advice in
exchange for some whiskey. After he finishes off the bottle, the Gambler
gives away the tricks of his trade and his advice on life. "If you're gonna play
the game boy, you gotta learn to play it right. You gotta know when to
hold 'em, know when to fold 'em, know when to walk away and know when to
run. You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table,
there'll be time enough for countin' when the dealin's done.” The
Gambler goes on to mention, "Every gambler knows the secret to
survivin' is knowin' what to throw away and knowin' what to keep, 'cause
every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser and the best that you can
hope for is to die in your sleep. At this point, The Gambler falls
asleep and at the end of the song we are told by the young man that
"somewhere in the darkness, The Gambler, he broke even and in his final
words I found an ace that I could keep". The song became Kenny's
signature song even though it was never my favorite. The USFL's Houston
Gamblers were named after the song and Kenny Rogers, the former MLB
pitcher, was nicknamed "The Gambler" after the song. Here is the real
advice...If you are from Texas and come to visit the Gulf Coast and
challenge the Gamblers to a friendly game of cards, or a BDFL football
game, be careful because they will beat you and take your money at both.
