Five Mile Massacre

The Polish Cannon (Sebastian Janikowski) gave the Fightin' Slovaks a big boot in the Battle of Brookside

The Slovaks rise up in the Battle of Brookside

CARDIFF, AL - The Battle of Brookside is such a fierce rivalry, it has to be played at a neutral site each season. The origins of the rivalry dates back to 1906 when football and coal mining collided. Legend has it when labor relations between the Slovak immigrant miners and the greedy Sloss Iron & Steel Co. reached an impasse, the only way to resolve the labor dispute was a football game played along the banks of Five Mile Creek which still flows through the quaint Eastern European-esque village. The Fighting Slavs (as they were referred to back then) won the violent, inaugural match over the Coal Barons 9-2, commonly known in the history books as the "Five Mile Massacre", thus gaining their freedom to unionize in the New World against their oppressors. Shortly thereafter, Brookside began to grow and florish with commerce, education, religion and culture. It has never been the same since. After five generations of Slovak influence in America, the Battle of Brookside is still celebrated and relived each year in the BDFL.

The Power of the Pony in the BDFL this season

AUDUBON - The BDFL has been drafting the best talent in college football (before the NFL Draft) since 2006 with their patented "Pony Draft". With one rookie per team (16 total) guaranteed of making opening day rosters, not many "ponies" were ever taken on Draft Night. However, this season has been an anomaly with Paxton Lynch, Kenyan Drake, Jordan Howard and Dak Prescott all making opening day rosters without being taken in the annual Pony Draft. It takes more than one year to make a trend, but with a record 21 "ponies" in the BDFL this season, the "Power of the Pony" is raising eyebrows across the nation.
