PASCO COUNTY - "Carpetbaggers" was the term Southerners gave to Northerners who moved to the South during the Reconstruction era (1865 and 1877). It was a term, suggesting opportunism and exploitation by unwanted outsiders. These carpetbaggers often formed alliances with freed slaves and southern white Republicans, known as Scalawags. Together these groups politically manipulated and controlled the former Confederate States of America for varying periods of time for their own financial and power gains. Carpetbaggers have always been seen as insidious outsiders with questionable objectives meddling in local Southern politics, buying up plantations at fire-sale prices and taking advantage of good old Southern folks. The Wizard and his Pasco County entourage is much like modern day carpetbaggers when it comes to the BDFL.
