BDFL to reveal alternate helmets in 2026

TITLETOWN - As a new twist during the 2026 season, the BDFL will feature one alternate helmet (Operation: ALT HELM 2026) per week for 16 weeks. One BDFL team’s ALT HELM will be featured each week with a photo and brief description of the ALT HELM on Iron Hand’s page at TheBDFL.com. The league will target special home games for each team to help fire up the home crowd and create more excitement and awareness for the featured team. Week 1 will feature the defending BDFL Champions (Brookside Dogs) and their ALT HELM 2026. Here's a sneak peek of all the helmets for ALT HELM 2026 for being a loyal follower of the BDFL...

Week 1 ALT HELM: Brookside Dogs
The 2025 BDFL Champions stuck with their traditional colors showcasing a crimson shell with a pewter "Mad Dog" for their side logo. The "Mad Dog" logo was influenced by the Memphis Mad Dogs from the Canadian Football League (CFL) in 1995. The dog bone below the dog face is a tribute to the Dogs original helmet back in 1995 as well.

Week 2 ALT HELM: Southside Cheetahs
For their 2026 ALT HELM, the Southside Cheetahs went Back to the Future with a real-life cheetah print to showcase authenticity and pay tribute to one of their earlier helmet designs in the BDFL when they were known as the Riverchase Cheetahs. With a classic design like this, it is easy to see how the Cheetahs have won four BDFL titles since 1995.

Week 3 ALT HELM: Black Creek Freebirds
In alignment with the 250th anniversary of the freedom declared by the United States of America's founding fathers in 1776, the Black Creek Freebirds' 2026 ALT HELM features an oversized "free" soaring American bald eagle logo on the side of the helmet with traditional black and gold stripes running down the middle of a burgandy shell with a black facemask.

Week 4 ALT HELM: North Birmingham Vulcans
The Vulcs' ALT HELM is a radical move from their traditional World Football League (WFL) design of 1975. The red shell and blue facemask is reminiscent of the Vestavia Hills Rebels helmets from the 1970s. The full-body muscular Vulcan is facing North Birmingham holding a hammer and anvil (instead of a spear) to showcase the city's iron and steel heritage.

Week 5 ALT HELM: Southside Cheetahs
Da Blitz's ALT HELM is a tribute to the German national athletic teams featuring the golden Bundesadler eagle shield on the side of a black shell with a black facemask. The familiar shield was wore by the German teams in the Olympics and the World Cup, so it was extended into the BDFL for the 2026 season. The stealth look aligns perfectly with the Blitz's motiff.

Week 6 ALT HELM: Green Springs Grenades
"Mineral" took some liberties with ALT HELM 2026 returning to their original team name due to fan demand. The G-Men's ALT HELM is an army green shell to resemble a combat helmet and the stenciled letters spelling out GRENADES is in a familiar military font and colored in agent orange to represent those killed due to the Vietnam War.

Week 7 ALT HELM: Fairfield PowerSleds
The Sleds checked a few boxes with ALT HELM. Beginning with a tribute to the Birmingham Thunderbolts from the first XFL in 2001. The "M" on the front of the helmet is for the "Mean Machine" which is a long-time moniker of the PowerSleds (one of the BDFL's "Magnificent Seven"), plus lightning bolts have been synonymous with the PowerSleds since 1995.

Week 8 ALT HELM: Benton Bullets
With ALT HELM 2026, the Benton Bullets stuck to their traditional colors of black, blue, silver and gold with a black matte shell, silver facemask and their familiar styled "Bullet B" logo on the side of the helmet. The Bullets unveiled their ALT HELM at the first 2026 meeting of the Selma Quarterback Club back in August for regional approval.

Week 9 ALT HELM: Western Hills Wildcats
The Western Hills Wildcats turned back to their Illinois days for their classic ALT HELM 2026 with a traditional Libertyville Wildcats throwback look complete with the youth league Wildcats paw print mark on both sides of the helmet. The "midnight blue" helmet shell and facemask pay tribute to the nearby Chicago Bears of the National Football League (NFL).

Week 10 ALT HELM: Cahaba River Bandits

Altadena's ALT HELM pays tribute to the nearby Cahaba River and the original United States Football League's (USFL) Tampa Bay Bandits (1983). The metallic silver shell, black facemask and the horse-riding bandit mark is a nice upgrade from the old black silhouette of the original horse-riding bandit. Cahaba River lilies are shown in the background of the image.

Week 11 ALT HELM: Magic City Mayors
Billed as their "Magical Power" look, the Mayors ALT HELM 2026 is a tribute to former Magic City Mayors George Seibels and David Vann. The white shell and black facemask is a stark contrast to their traditional black helmets. The patented "M" crown logo on the sides has been modernized with a silver lining to portray optimism, a long-time team characteristic.

Week 12 ALT HELM: Shades Creek Sloth Monsters
The Legend of Shades Creek took on a new look with ALT HELM 2026. Instead of a feared mysterious beast who has terrorized the BDFL for years, the Slothsters opted for a cuddly cartoon three-toed sloth to don their bonnets. With black and gold stripes and a black facemask, these helmets were a big hit at the Hoover Met in Week 12.

Week 13 ALT HELM: Jugtown Juggernauts
For their ALT HELM 2026, the Juggernauts returned to their Gardendale Rockets roots with a white shell, silver facemask and golden shield to resemble an astronaut's helmet. The NASA logo is a reference to the United States Space & Rocket program and the Nauts' unstoppable identity as a dominant force in the BDFL. Week 13 and Apollo 13 is a coincidence.

Week 14 ALT HELM: Fieldstown Bulls

The Bellcows took some "country-connect" liberties with their ALT HELM and altered their nickname and team colors along with their helmet. In Week 14, all of Fieldstown will pay tribute to the original Birmingham Bulls of the World Hockey Association (WHA) who played major league hockey at the Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center (BJCC) 1976-79. 

Week 15 ALT HELM: Duncanville Armadillos
In Texas less is more, more less. The Armos ALT HELM 2026 is a reflection of this antidote, but don't be fooled by the simplicity. The helmet design is a tribute to the Permiam Panthers from the near by Permiam Basin and Friday Night Lights lore and the highly successful Duncanville Panthers. The star in the middle of the block "D" is for the Lonestar State.

Week 16 ALT HELM: Gulf Coast Gamblers
The Gambino took advantage of Mobile's Mardi Gras heritage with their ALT HELM. Team colors morphed into traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold with a gambling jester on the side of a purple shell with a gold facemask. The new Mobile Mysticks of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) and Tulane are already copying this look.

2076 NFL PROFILE: Sacramento Swarm

After supporting the National Basketball Association's (NBA) Sacramento Kings since 1985, the NFL finally awarded Northern California with their own professional football team. This is another example of the new regional teams sweeping the NFL in the future. Make no mistake about it, "The Swarm" is Northern California's NFL team. Headquartered in Sacramento (120 miles northeast from the Santa Clara 49ers), "The Swarm" serves one of the largest "video" markets in the United States including the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto DMA, plus other key Northern California areas like Placer, Yolo, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Sutter counties. The team draws it's nickname from the now defuncted newspaper, The Sacramento Bee. The team plays its home games in the newly renovated Sutter Health Park Stadium which was once the temporary home of Major League Baseball's (MLB) Las Vegas Athletics. The stadium is known as "The Hive" to the locals. The team colors are black, gold and dark gray.
