An Indian Road Killin' The expansion Armadillos put 61 points on the scoreboard to make road kill of the Wooden Warriors at the Reservation BLACK CREEK - The armadillo is native to North America and has long been part of the Native American culture. The Aztec name for the animal was Azotochtli, which means turtle-rabbit. Later in 1540, when Hernando DeSoto and his armored Conquistadores were raping and pillaging across the now Southern part of the United States, they discovered the tough animal and renamed it "armadillo" which is Spanish for "little armored one." During their further exploration into what is nowadays the Black Creek area of Alabama, DeSoto and his men also discovered the Poarch Band of Creek Indians who were notorious for trapping, cooking and eating armadillo, leaving the mammal extinct in Alabama for many years. Only until recent years of migration has the proud armadillo made it back to Alabama soil. The armadillo is now the state mammal of Texas and paybacks to the Creeks are hell.
