You know about the Big Daddy Football League, but do you know about who fathered the legendary league? Eugene "Big Daddy" Lipscomb was a giant defensive lineman in the NFL during the 1950's and early 60's who played 10 years with the Los Angeles Rams, Baltimore Colts and Pittsburgh Steelers. Big Daddy was the Pro Bowl MVP in 1959 and 1962. The prototype of today's defensive lineman, Big Daddy stood 6'6'' and weighted 306 lbs. He was not overweight and possessed great strength, speed and agility that put him 50 years ahead of his time. Born in Uniontown, AL, Lipscomb never attended college. With huge arms and hands, he was first spotted by a track coach in the Marines at Camp Pendleton where he was lifting 40 lb. cannonballs with his fingertips. Signed as a free agent by the Rams in 1953, Big Daddy had a wingspan of a pterodactyl and was a fearsome pass rusher. During the off-season, he was a pro wrestler. Fast on the field and off, Big Daddy died on May 10, 1963 of an apparent overdose of heroin in Baltimore at the age of 31.
