* The Tainted Title

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes...
As David Bowie so eloquently pinned in the 70's, back when the BDFL was just a brainchild of Iron Hand..."Turn and face the strain - Ch-ch-changes - Don’t want to be a richer man - Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes - Turn and face the strain - Ch-ch-changes - Just gonna have to be a different man - Time may change me - But I can’t trace time".

After input from the inner circle of the BDFL, here’s what is leading the way as far as possible changes to expect in 2006…

1. THE 2006 BDFL PONY DRAFT

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes...The week leading up to the NFL Draft, the BDFL will conduct it's own college player draft. Only those eligible for the NFL Draft will be available for selection. The 2006 BDFL Pony Draft would start with the prior year's 16th place finishing team picking a college player (Rookie to be in '06), then 15th, 14th, etc. If the Fighting Slovaks take QB-Young/TEX...then at the 2006 BDFL Genuine Draft next fall, they will already have one of their QB roster spots selected. This will create off-season drama and will add another level of draft research, strategy and the "escape dimension" (made famous on ABC Sports by sportscaster Lee Grosscup in the 70's) to the BDFL because you won't know what NFL team the player will end up, or how he will be used in 2006. The 2006 BDFL Pony Draft will be conducted online, one team at a time until it's completion, with the "snooze you loose" rule in place, starting on Monday, April 24th and ending by Friday, April 28th. This could be fun and add a new twist as to how we'll divvy up the BDFL's rookie crop. The 2006 NFL Draft is scheduled for Saturday, April 29th. The 2006 BDFL Genuine Draft is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 26th at 6:00pm. Based on last year's rookie crop a similar draft would have probably looked like the one below...

2. DRAFT FEWER PLAYERS

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes...The old less is more theory. Addition by subtraction. Draft fewer players and carry smaller more flexible rosters. Draft 13 roster positions (one less QB, RB and WR) instead of the customary 16 roster positions. By carrying smaller more flexible rosters, instituting the Released, Injured, Cut, Kicked-off, or Arrested (RICKA) Rule for much of the season (8-10 weeks), and giving each team a set number of roster moves (4-5) for this period, each team can improve their roster when a hardship, or a poor performance creeps up. This keeps more talent available throughout the season for everybody to draw from, plus gives teams the ability to correct draft mistakes, injuries, arrests, low usage doghouse issues, etc. This would force teams to keep up with the NFL more to improve their club and scoring should improve because more productive players would be utilized each week and not sitting on somebody’s bench, or not in the league at all. For example, the starting season roster and the final roster for a particular team could look like the ones below…

Pos. Mad Italians (start)   Pos. Mad Italians (finish)
QB1 Manning/IND   QB1 Manning/IND
QB2 Johnson/MIN >>>>  QB2 Griese/TB
RB1 Johnson/CIN   RB1 Johnson/CIN
RB2 Bush/TEN   RB2 Bush/TEN
RB3 Gore/SF >>>> RB3 Williams/BUF
WR1 Gates/SD   WR1 Gates/SD
WR2 Houshman/CIN   WR2 Houshman/CIN
WR3 Bruce/STL >>>> WR3 Bryant/CLE
WR4 Miller/PIT   WR4 Miller/PIT
PK1 Elam/DEN   PK1 Elam/DEN
PK2 Brown/HOU >>>> PK2 Gould/CHI
DF1 Seattle   DF1 Seattle
DF2 Green Bay   DF2 Green Bay

2. DRAW AND DRAFT BY DIVISION IN PODS

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes...The BDFL is big on tradition and rivalries, so there is no real need to throw out the traditional divisions and the rivalries that have been established over the years. However, the draft could be conducted by “division pods” giving each team in the division the same type chance to make the playoffs as their divisional brethren. The division order would be drawn first, then the order within the divisions could be drawn thus leading to the 16 first round picks. The following rounds would flip flop as usual. The draft could look like something below…

REDNECKS

GRAY BEARDS

1

3. EXPANDED, NOT WATERED DOWN PLAY-OFFS

Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes...After Week 14, the regular season would end and the BDFL’s Big Daddy Championship Series (BDCS) would begin with a eight team race to the title over the remaining three weeks culminating with the Big Daddy Bowl in Week 17. All four divisional point leaders with winning records would qualify for the playoffs as divisional winners and the next best four teams with winning records would qualify as wildcard teams. Teams would be seeded 1-8 based on the most points after Week 14 and would compete in a tournament type format to determine the league's champion. The new structure would allow for all quality teams to compete for the BDFL title regardless of how tough their division may be. The other eight teams would fall into their own little pitiful bowl structure to play for 9th place. Based on the 2005 season after Week 14 the new fangled BDCS playoff system would have looked like below…

TEAM RECORD POINTS HOW THEY QUALIFIED # Seed
Wildcats   (12-2)   394  Yellow Hammer Champs

Wizards (7-7) 388 Green Horn Champs #2 Seed

The anatomy of a BDFL trade

WIZ: I need a kicker this week. I'll trade you the drunken Pollock (he had 13 points last week) for your second kicker.

IRON: Let me check Pollock's off week vs. Wilkins off week.

WIZ: I'll consider it a favor between fantasy league commissioners. We have
to stick together to quell the masses.

IRON: My #2 kicker Edinger/MIN is off this week too, so it won't help trading with me. Ask around the league.

WIZ: The Wizards are looking to deal Oakland's Janikowski since both of their kickers are off this week. Let me know if anyone is interested. He scored 13 points last week in case anyone was wondering, and he was half lit when he did that.

IRON: Any bites?

WIZ: Not yet. I sent out a distress call to Jaimie this morning.

WOO: The Wizards are proposing to trade PK Janikowski/OAK to the Woosiers for PK Bryant/TB! Please bless this transaction so that the Wizards can have a kicker playing this week and the Woosiers can possibly score 15 or more points in a game in the future.

IRON: PK-Janikowski/OAK Wizards to Woosiers for PK-Bryant/TB effective for

Week 5. So shall it be proposed, emailed and approved, so shall it be done.
WIZ: It's not which player you trade for or even when the trade is proposed, it's which BDFL team you trade with that determines the outcome. Trade with one of the Commissioner's cronies and it's a rubber stamp. Trade with a non-crony and the request will probably be filed in Iron's trash can.

IRON: I resent your shallow comments and the next time you need a favor, it could be difficult.

THE END: And everyone wonders why we don't have a lot of trades.

The Wizard steps up to host the BDFL's Super Bowl Gala BRENTWOOD, TN - In keeping with the BDFL's tradition, the Wizard and family have been very gracious to step up and host the league and their families (and friends) for the annual Super Bowl Gala on Sunday, February 5th at their home in Greystone. All attending will be asked to help pitch in to help with food and drinks. This is a wonderful league event and all teams and their families are urged strongly to come and participate in the festivities.

How the annual Bowl games finished in 2005

BRENTWOOD, TN - The BDFL playoff and bowl game match-ups have been decided with the Riverchase Cheetahs upsetting the Rocky Ridge Wildcats in Big Daddy Bowl IV in Week 17. See this year's match-ups and results below...

Iron Hand handicaps the 2005 BDFL Genuine Draft

BRENTWOOD, TN - Looking at the 2005 BDFL Draft this is how Iron Hand sees the divisions finishing in 2005 after Big Daddy Bowl IV...Notice that the experts are very close to predicting all four division winners thru Week 14. It's amazing the vision that Iron Hand had shortly after the 2005 annual BDFL Genuine Draft. Iron gets two of four divisional winners correct and narrowly misses in the Green Horn Division. Way off in the Gray Beard because he went with his heart and underestimated Shaun Alexander.

Winning record essential to making BDFL playoffs

BRENTWOOD, TN - Ever since the Bullets landed their tainted title in 1997, the BDFL has mandated that all champions from then on would have to have a winning record to win the title. So going into Week 16 a team must be at least 8-7 to make the playoff

2005 Prize Money

BRENTWOOD, TN - The BDFL is happy to announce that there will be no prize money in 2005. All the BDFL entry fees are going to benefit Kenny Breal's family that suffered severe damage in Biloxi due to Hurricane Katrina. Thank you for your generosity and care. To date the BDFL has donated $800 to the cause.

Bobby Knight "No Tolerance" policy for weekly starters

BRENTWOOD, TN - Out with the old, in with the new. In this day of instant messages and cell phones, the BDFL has turned to a new Bobby Knight "No Tolerance" policy for submitting weekly starters. Many in the front office don't have the time to nurse teams anymore. Weekly starters are due in the BDFL by Friday at 7pm. This gives each team plenty of time to do their research and select their starters. Obviously, late changes due to injury (up to the time games start - usually 12n.) is the only exception. Laziness should not constitute additional work on the BDFL.
