LONDON
- While Southern Rock was sweeping the United States in the
1970s, Glam Rock was emerging in the United Kingdom. I first
heard David Bowie's "Fame" on the jukebox at Bartee's after
school in the 8th grade (1975), so you know it had to be pretty
mainstream by then. Glam rock is defined as a style of rock
music that developed in the UK during the early 1970s by bands
and musicians who performed in outrageous costumes, wore makeup
with lots of glitter, had elaborate hairstyles and in
particular, wore platform shoes. Glam artists drew on diverse
sources across music and throwaway pop culture ranging from
bubblegum pop and 1950s Rock 'N Roll to cabaret, science fiction
and complex art rock. The flamboyant clothing and live on-stage
performances were characteristics of the genre. Glitter rock was
a more extreme version of glam. The UK charts were inundated
with glam rock acts from 1971 to 1975. The March 1971 appearance
of T. Rex frontman Marc Bolan on the BBC's music show Top of
the Pops, wearing glitter and satins, is often cited as the
beginning of the movement. See the actual video below with Elton
John on keyboard. Other British glam rock artists include David
Bowie, Mott The Hoople, Sweet, Slade, Mud, Roxy Music and Gary
Glitter. Those not central to the genre, such as Elton John, Rod
Stewart and Freddie Mercury of Queen, also adopted glam styles.
In the United States the scene was much less prevalent,
with Alice Cooper and Lou Reed leading the way in Glam Rock.
Other American Glam Rock artists included KISS, New York Dolls,
Sparks, Suzi Quatro, Iggy Pop and Jobriath. Glam Rock declined
after the mid-1970s, but would go on to influence other musical
genres including punk rock, glam metal, New
Romantic, deathrock and gothic rock. There may, or may not, be
any head-to-head Glam Rock contests in the BDFL in 2022, but we
have come up with 16 honorary Glam Rock teams this season to
help pay tribute to the genre, i.e., Durham Troubadours (Roxy
Music), Great Britain Bohemians (Queen), River Finn Crocodiles
(Elton John), Wolverhampton Runaways (Slade), Harefield Fox
Trotters (Sweet), Michigan Iguanas (The Stooges), Milwaukee
Leathernecks (Suzi Quatro), New York Dolls (Same), Bay City
Rollers (Same), Mott The Hoople (Hereford British Lions), Los
Angeles Spartans (Sparks), Detroit Rock City Destroyers (KISS),
Sundridge Rebels (David Bowie), London Raptors (T. Rex), Arizona
Nightmares (Alice Cooper) and the Coney Island Velvet Spiders
(Lou Reed).
