2023 PONY DRAFT

Pony Prospectus

The media experts once had Young going to the Lions, but it will most likely now be the Panthers

The BDFL's 2023 Pony Draft Watch List

TITLETOWN - The BDFL is built on integrity, but thrives on innovation. The BDFL invented the Pony Draft. The BDFL drafts incoming college players even before the NFL does. Along these lines, the BDFL monitors the college game and the players that will most likely be eligible for the upcoming NFL Draft in April of 2023 with their annual "BDFL Pony Draft Watch List". The 2023 BDFL Pony Draft class will have some superstars for sure (Bryce Young, for one), but it can be difficult to project stardom at this stage of the draft evaluation process. Therefore, the BDFL has compiled their first official "Pony Draft Prospectus" for the Class of 2023 consisting of the top 32 college prospects who we believe will have the best chance of being selected in the 2023 BDFL Pony Draft for the fantasy football positions. Each prospect has been assigned an NFL team that Iron Hand, the Commissioner of the BDFL, feels would be a good fit. 32 players. 32 NFL teams. No duplication. Listed below are the best 2023 fantasy football prospects and from this list should come the BDFL's final 16 BDFL Pony Draft picks in April of 2023. These are the 32 players the BDFL's media experts have identified as "Pony-worthy" after the 2022 college season. Several of these players (Robinson, Levis, Flowers, Charbonnet, etc.) made it on the BDFL's radar last year, but chose to come back to college for another season rather than enter the 2022 NFL Draft. Iron Hand keeps it fair and square with one Pony prospect per one NFL team and for the sake of simplicity. It will be interesting to keep an eye on this "2023 Pony Draft Prospectus" to see where they go in the 2023 NFL Draft and which 16 make it to Opening Day rosters in the BDFL next fall.

2023 BDFL Pony Draft Prospectus

#1 QB-Bryce Young BAMA

Carolina mortgaged the franchise to get a franchise quarterback. If they take Stroud over Young, it will hurt them more than "The Curse of the Bambino". The "Curse" resulted in the lack of a World Series win by the Red Sox for an 86-year period from 1918 until 2004.

#2 WR-Jaxon Njigba OSU

Njigba may be the best wide receiver to come out of Ohio State in the last three years and that is saying something. The Bears should have plenty of picks in the 2023 NFL Draft, if they play their cards right and they desperately need more talent around Justin Fields.

#3 WR-Jordan Addison USC

The Pack is in need of more quality receivers since Devonta Adams left after the 2021 season. It is time for the front office to trade up and draft a ten-year solution at the position and give their next quarterback a legitimate chance to win another Super Bowl.

#4 RB-Bijan Robinson UTA

Authur Smith wants to run the ball, but need more ball carriers than a former wideout who was converted into a runningback. Robinson is a thoroughbred type rusher with fresh legs. Look for the Falcons to improve their backfield in this draft.

#5 QB-C.J. Stroud OSU

Yes, he is vastly overrated, but the NFL is desperate for starting quarterbacks, especially teams like the Colts who started three different dudes last season. We say Indigenapolis take Stroud early as their new "franchise" quarterback and hope he becomes special.

#6 WR-Quentin Johnston TCU

Johnston showed nothing in the national title game against Georgia when "big time" talent usually shows up. Nonetheless, Houston needs help all over and Texans like to stick together, so this pick makes a lot of since to the BDFL media experts.

#7 RB-Jahmyr Gibbs BAMA

Gibbs could be the next Alvin Kamara. The skill set is very similar and his game should translate well in the pass happy NFL. The Steelers struggled to fine a suitable back-up for Najee Harris last year and Gibbs should be able to complement this offense.

#8 WR-Jalin Hyatt UTK

Name the Titans leading receiver. You get my point. Look for the Titans to add more quality, more speed and more depth at the position in this draft and it all starts with the burner from nearby Knoxville, Tennessee.

#9 TE-Michael Mayer ND

The Lions still need offensive weapons. Where they will go will all their picks is anybody's guess. We think they will continue to bolster that offensive line and replace Hockenson at the same time with the Irish's scary good Michael "Myers" Mayer.

#10 RB-Mohamed Ibrahim MIN

Chubb and Hunt can't carry the mail forever in Cleveland and it could be time for the Brownies to start drafting their backfield of the future. We love Mo's ability to move the chains and keep drives going in the NFL, no matters where he ends up.

#11 TE-Darnell Washington UGA

At 6'7", Washington is a match-up nightmare. The Chargers like the recently required Gerald Everett at the tight end position, but the chance to add Washington to Herbert's arsenal in LA will be too tempting for the Bolts organization to pass up in this draft.

#12 RB-Zach Charbonnet UCLA

With Edmonds and Benjamin gone and Conner getting on up there, the Cardinals need more dependale bodies in the backfield. Charbonnet was well traveled in the college ranks, but could fine a nice, steady home in the Arizona desert.

#13 QB-Hendon Hooker UTK

Hooker reminds us of Geno Smith. Tall, slinder, athletic, accurate and with a strong arm. Just like Smith, it could take him a few years to adjust to the NFL. We say the Seahawks will take Hooker and let him learn from Smith for at least one season.

#14 QB-Will Levis KY

Not impressed with Levis this past season. In games where the Wildcats needed a difference-maker, he disappeared, or fumbled the game away. He looks the part of an NFL starter, but I have my doubts. No doubt, he's a good fit for all the misfits in Denver.

#15 RB-Tank Bigsby AU

Fournette is getting long in the tooth and White can't carry the mail by all by himself. Look for the Buccaneers to bolster their backfield in this draft with a running back. Tank's ceiling may be the highest of any back in this draft since he got nothing from Auburn.

#16 QB-Anthony Richardson UF

Derek Carr is done in Las Vegas, so the Raiders are in the market for a new franchise quarterback. Plus they have enough veterans to build around with Adams, Jacobs, Waller, Renfroe, etc.. We think they will reach early to take the project in Richardson.

#17 WR-Josh Downs UNC

With Callaway leaving and Thomas, Ingram and Kamara getting longer in the tooth, the Saints need some more, young offensive weapons to surround around new QB-Derek Carr. Downs is super talented and could be the wide receiver steal in this draft.

#18 RB-DeWayne McBride UAB

This may be too high in the order for a lot of the so-called media experts, but McBride as earned this spot with the BDFL brass. McBride led the nation in rushing during the 2022 season on a mediocre UAB Blazer team. The Jaguars need more ball carriers.

#19 RB-Kenny McIntosh UGA

Georgia running backs transition well into the NFL...Chubb, Michel, Swift, White, Cook, etc.. McIntosh should be no different. The Dolphins need some depth at the postion and some RB insurance if Mostert and Wilson decide to go elsewhere.

#20 QB-Cameron Ward stayed at WSU

The Bills should be set at quarterback for years to come, but can you say that about their back-up? Ward is the latest small college (transferred from Incarnate Word) QB to hit it big at the D-I level. Whether he comes out for the draft, or not, is the real question.

#21 TE-Dalton Kincaid UU

Utah is turning into TEU. They have some room to go to catch up with Iowa, but Kincaid, Kuithe and Yassmin should all be playing in the NFL in the near future. The Commandos still have a slew of serviceable tight ends, but need a true playmaker at the position.

#22 WR-Kayshon Boutte LSU

The Ravens seem to always been in the market for a wide receiver. With Hollywood Brown gone and Bateman as a solid WR2, look for Baltimore to try and land a true WR1 in this draft and Boutte has the talent to be the next LSU receiver to strive in the NFL.

#23 QB-Tanner McKee SU

The Rams really need a back-up quarterback as you have seen this past season. McKee may never be a franchise quarterback, but could be a steady back-up in the mode of a Brian Hoyer, Taylor Henicke, etc. type player in the league for a long time.

#24 WR-Cedric Tillman UTK

Tillman stayed hurt most of the season like George Pickens last year at Georgia. He was supposed to be better than Hyatt, so what does that say about those watching practice in Knoxville? The Eagles should continue to build talent around Jalen Hurts.

#25 RB-Tyjae Spears TU

Isiah "Ferdie" Pacheco was the steal of the 2021 NFL Draft last season, but the Chiefs still need another stud running back for Andy Reid's versatile scoring machine. We say they steal another quality RB in this draft with the talented Spears from Tulane.

#26 RB-Devon Achane TAMU

A late comer to the BDFL Pony Draft Watch List, Achane has moved into the Top 25. Even though TAMU has had a decent running back since Curtis Dickey, Achane has a chance to stick in the NFL. The Patriots, like the Niners and Seahawks love to stockpile backs.

#27 TE-Luke Musgrave UO

Brian DaBol used to coach tight ends at New England and has used multiple tight end in his offenses at Alabama and Buffalo. Look for the Giants to build more around Jones and Barkley to make them a little more unpredictable.

#28 WR-Rashee Rice SMU

Another pass catching Rice in the Bay Area could be a San Francisco treat. Now with their backfield stable with McCaffrey and Mitchell, the Niners add more depth to the receiving corps with Rice. My guess is jersey #80 has been retired by the 49ers.

#29 WR-Zay Flowers BC

Look for the Jets to keep adding weapons to the offense. They hit the lottery last season with Breece Hall and Garrett Wilson. Zay could have a similar impact if added to this offense of Zach Wilson/Mike White, James Robinson, Corey Davis and Braxton Berrios.

#20 QB-Jaren Hall BYU

Hall is a late arrival to the dance. We do know Kirk Cousins is surrounded by talent in Minnesota and we do know that he's getting on up there. What we don't know is who the Vikings' back-up quarterback may be. It may be time to start grooming one.

#31 TE-Cade Stover Stayed at OSU

If you are the Cincinnati GM, you load up on more weapons for Joe Burrow, or you'll be fired. A running back is probably in the cards too and more depth at wide receiver, but this tight end from Ohio State will find the field more often in the short haul.

#32 PK-B.T. Potter CLEM

We had Will Reichard in this spot, but he decided to stay at Bama for another year, so we slid in Potter. B.T. may have more range than Will, but "Deadeye" is more accurate. Career stats: Potter - 75.3% FGP. Reichard - 82.7% FGP. The 'Boys will need kickers in camp.
